Outgoing President/CEO Bohdan Watral recognized at ICUL Convention
Bohdan Watral, long-time President/CEO of Selfreliance Federal Credit Union in Chicago, was inducted into the Illinois Credit Union Hall of Fame April 5, 2019. The ceremony was part of the Illinois Credit Union League (ICUL) annual convention’s Celebration Luncheon.
Bohdan Watral was appointed CEO of SFCU in 1981, when the credit union’s assets were $32 million, with $1.4 million in reserves. The credit union had three branch offices, and a membership of 8,000.
As of his retirement on December 31, 2018, Selfreliance FCU had grown to an asset size of $589 million, with over $110 million in reserves. Membership exceeds 24,000. In addition to its home office in the heart of Ukrainian Village in Chicago, Selfreliance FCU has nine branch offices in three states: Illinois, Michigan and New Jersey. SFCU is one of the best capitalized and most financially stable financial institutions in the United States.
Mr. Watral has received many awards and accolades over the years, in recognition of his contributions to credit union development. He has been an advocate for credit unions in the United States, serving on presidential and gubernatorial committees in support of credit unions. He was instrumental in facilitating the rebirth of the cooperative movement in Ukraine. In 1996 Bohdan Watral was honored by the US Credit Union Foundation with the Herb Wegner Memorial Award for his support of the international credit union movement. He was named utive of the Year (Illinois Council of Credit Union utive Society, 1992, 1995 and 1998); Spirit of Service (Illinois Credit Union League, 1994), Letter of Commendation from US President Bill Clinton in 1996, Presidential Medal of Service for Credit Union Development from Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma in 1997. His excellent rapport with politicians and community leaders strengthens the credit union movement and our Ukrainian community.
Mr. Watral defined his career with the following: “…My commitment to the success of our credit union has been without reservation. I have given our institution, our community, our mission my all during my years as the chief utive officer.”
Bohdan Watral will continue to serve as Treasurer of the Board of Directors of SFCU, as well as a member of the board of The Selfreliance Foundation. We wish him a happy retirement, in the company of his wife Petrusia, his three children and his delightful grandchildren.

Богдан Ватраль, Президент і Виконавчий Директор Української Федеральної Кредитової Спілки “Самопоміч”, який відійшов на пенсію з кінцем 2018 року після 40-річної сталої праці у Кредитівці, був вшанований Лігою Кредитних Спілок штату Ілліной 5-го квітня 2019 р. під час їхньої річної конвенції, як член Вшанованих Постатей-Провідників Кооперативного Руху.
Протягом 40 років плідної праці, під вмілим проводом Виконавчого Директора Богдана Ватраля, Кредитівка “Самопоміч” зросла від $32 мільйони активів до $580 мільйонів, резерви зросли від $1.4 мільйон до $110 мільйонів. Членство збільшилось до 24,000. Кредитівка працює у трьох штатах США: Ілліной, Нью Джерзі та Мічіґaн. УФКС “Самопоміч” є однією з найбільш стабільних фінансових установ у США.
Протягом довгих років праці в Кредитовій Спілці, як Президент та Виконавчий Директор, Богдан Ватраль отримав багато нагород та відзначень, у тому числі нагороду “Herb Wegner Memorial Award“ (надано Фундацією Кредитних Спілок США, 1996) за важливий вклад у розвиток всесвітнього кредитового руху; “Управитель Року/ utive of the Year“ (надано Національною Асоціацією Кредитних Спілок США, 1992, 1995 та 1998) відзачення Екзекутива Року (від Illnois Council of Credit Union utive Society, 1992, 1995 and 1998); а також листи-похвали від Президента США Білла Клінтона та медаль за вклад у розвиток кредитних спілок від українського президента Л. Кучми.
Як провідник Кредитівки “Самопоміч” Богдан Ватраль був одночасно сильним прихильноком розвитку кредитових спілок у всьому світі. Він відіграв головну роль у сприянні відновленню кредитових спілок в Україні. Його постійні контакти з політичними та громадськими лідерами зміцнюють рух кредитових спілок та нашу українську громаду.
У сім’ї Богдана Ватраля та його дружини Петрусі – троє дітей та четверо внуків.
На річних Загальних Зборах Кредитівки “Самопоміч” Богдан Ватраль схарактеризував свою кар'єру такими словами: “… Моя відданість успіху нашої Кредитової Спілки була беззастережною. Я присвятив “себе“ нашій установі, нашій спільноті, протягом всіх довгих років на посаді Президента та Виконавчого Директора“.
Радіємо, що Богдан Ватраль далі служитиме як фінансовий референт Ради Директорів Кредитової Спілки “Самопоміч” та член управи Фундації “Самопоміч”. Бажаємо нашому довголітньому провідникові Кредитівки щастя і здоров’я, та родинної насолоди у товаристві жінки Петрусі, дітей і внуків.
